AdSense Clickbots On The Rage?

Panda Software reported that it has discovered a clickbot network used to create fake-clicks targetted at pay-per-click advertisements. The computes infected by Clickbot.A are connected to a number of webservers. Owner of the botnet can then monitor and control the botnet from there, including the page URL, number of clicks, etc.

?PandaLabs has detected a network of computers infected with the bot Clickbot.A, which is being used to defraud ?pay per click? systems, registering clicks automatically and providing lucrative returns for the creators. According to the data collected so far, the scam is exploiting a global network comprising more than 34,000 zombie computers (those infected by the bot).?

Commenting on the story, Publishing2 did an interesting (albeit exaggerated) calculation to predict the extent of the damage.

10 clicks/day X $1/click X 34,000 computers X 365 days = $124M annual fraud
100 clicks/day X $1/click X 34,000 computers X 365 days = $1.2B annual fraud
100 clicks/day X $5/click X 34,000 computers X 365 days = $6.2B annual fraud

Now, someone smart enough to create a botnet of 34000 computers will not run all at the same day. Probably only about 1% or 340 of the clickbot is running at any one day. 10 clicks a day? Probably. But 100 clicks/day is a tad too much. Coupled with an almost non-existant conversion rate, 100 clicks a day will raise too much red flags.

With Google’s smart pricing, the cost per click will drop to a low figure, probably less than 10 cents/click.

So, what we get here?

10 clicks/day X 10 cents/click X 340 computers X 365 days = $125 K annual fraud; just peanuts compared with Google’s multi billion dollar revenue.

What Is AdSense Clickbot

A bot is common parlance on the Internet for a software program that is a software agent. A Bot interacts with other network services intended for people as if it were a real person. One typical use of bots is to gather information. The term is derived from the word “robot,” reflecting the autonomous character in the “virtual robot”-ness of the concept.

Put simply, clickbot is a specialized bot made to simulate clicking. Initially popular for gaming cheat, now clickbot has taken the highlight in pay-per-click advertisement business. In 2004, a California man created a clickbot that he claimed cannot be detected by Google. Failed to make good money selling the program, he tried to blackmail Google for $150,000 to hand over the program. He was arrested, nonetheless.

For computer savvy users, creating a clickbot is very simple and straight forward. You just need a macro to record your activities. While the macro is recoding, you visit your own site and click on the ads. Save the macro, and then let it run. Of course, you will also need a list of proxies to cover your track.

Fortunately for advertisers and honest publishers, Google is not stupid. With the huge amount of data that it has, Google can easily compile the most comprehensive proxy list on earth. In the AdSense report, clicks from proxies will add up to the number of clicks, but no money is credited to the earning. As you guess, when the proxy clicks exceed a certain number, your AdSense account is disabled.

Organised crimes handle this by having the clickbot software on many computers around the world, each with their own Internet Service Provider. Some of these software may be installed without the computer owners’ permissions or knowledge, via trojans and viruses. Or it might be installed voluntarily by the click-network members.

Beginning of this year, Greg Boser from WebGuerilla did an experiment to test the extent of click-fraud by using clickbot, with no conclusive answer. Some experts claims that click fraud accounts for up to 20% of the clicks, generating more than $1 billion in a year.

Whether or not the estimation is correct, one thing is sure. Google, Yahoo and other big players in the PPC advertising business takes click-fraud very seriously, and it will be just a matter of time when fraudsters are caught.

20 Google AdSense Tips

1. AdSense Earning = Impression-count x Click-though-rate x Cost-per-click x smart-pricing-factor.
2. Impression count is basically referring to your traffic. It means the number of times AdSense block is displayed.

3. Click-through-rate (CTR) is ratio of clicks per impressions. It can range from 0.1% to 30%, but most commonly around 1% to 10%.

4. Cost-per-click (CPC) is the earning you get per click. While traditionally it refers to the amount advertisers pay for each click, it can also mean the amount publishers get for each click.

5. Smart-pricing is AdSense method to determine how valuable clicks from your site is worth. If clicks on your site doesn?t provide good value to advertisers, e.g. from visitors? geo-location that seldom translate to sales, you will only get a fraction of the supposed CPC.

6. Apply for AdSense account via blogger.com for faster approval

7. Once you get your AdSense publisher code, you can put it any of your websites without requiring further approval.

8. Read and reread Google AdSense Program Policies and Terms and Conditions.

9. Don?t click on your own ads, or ask people to click, even if you are using proxies.

10. Don?t use click-bots.

11. Don?t encourage your visitors to click on ads. The only acceptable text is ?Sponsored Links? and ?Advertisements?.

12. Don?t put competitor contextual ads on the same page as your AdSense, for example: Yahoo Publisher Network, Clicksor. Non-contextual ads are ok.

13. Don?t put your ads on objectionable material, e.g. adult sites, gambling sites, mp3, etc.

14. Basically, don?t cheat AdSense. Google will catch you, sooner or later.

15. Viewing your on website will not get you banned. Just make sure you don?t click on the ads.

16. However, repeatedly reload your page to jack up page impressions can get you banned.

17. When in doubt don?t hesitate to contact the AdSense team. They are very helpful.

18. You can try highest paying keywords from cwire.org, but know before-hand that you?ll face very fierce competitions.

19. Use Overture Bid Tool and Search Engine Keyword Tool to find suitable keyword.

20. CTR isn’t everything. If your CTR is high but gives low conversion rate for the advertiser site, it will trigger AdSense smart pricing.

How Google Detects Invalid Clicks

Still thinking to cheat AdSense? Stop that. It will never bring you anywhere. You might pull it off with smaller ads network, but definitely not with Google. Here are some detection methods they might use. At the very least, they have the resources to do so.

IP Address
If the AdSense click is originated from the same IP Address as the one used for accessing your AdSense account, your account is flagged.

Cookies
Most home users do not use static IP Address for Internet connection. In most cases just disconnect and reconnect will give you a new IP Address. But don’t forget, Google has set cookies on your computer.

Other Google Services
Thinking that you are safe just because you do not access your AdSense account? Think again. This time, consider these: GMail, Google Earth, Google Calendar, Google Search, Google Toolbar, Google Talk, Google Sitemap, Google Desktop, Blogger, and so on, and so on. With the wide range of services they provide, Google can trace the originator of most (or probably almost all) clicks.

Oh, why this computer / IP address / person is so trigger-click-happy on this particular website but never click on the ads on other sites?

And why is it that people accessing these sites direct (type-in URL or from bookmark) tend to be very active ad-clickers compared with those referred from search engine or other sites?

Click-Through-Rate (CTR)
Your CTR may range from 0.5% to 10%, but if it exceeds a certain point (probably around 10%), you are flagged.

Geo-Location
Used Urchin (Google Analytics) before? Then you should know that Google can trace traffics origin down to the small town. Different IP doesn’t mean much. Unless you site is really targetted to one small geo-point, a high number of clicks from nearby location will get you banned quickly.

Hardware address
MAC address of the LAN card, modem, and router works almost like a fingerprint. I’m not sure if Google can track this, but probably they do. They have rocket scientist, remember?

Advertisers conversion rate
Ad click is one thing. But does it bring value to the advertisers? If none of the clicks on your site translate to conversion to the advertiser, you are in trouble. First the Smart-Pricing hits, then your AdSense account disabled.

Search Engine Ranking
Your website is not indexed on any search engine, not linked by any prominent website, but get consistently high traffic? That sounds like something is in play. Regardless of whether it is an adware-embedded software, spam, trojan clickbot, or intentionally installed click-exchange network, it doesn’t sound right.

Webpage design
How about the “click here” or “support us”? Google has the best search engine in the world. Is it really that hard to find those words?

Combo
Each of these detection methods might seem rather weak. But combine them together, and not many click-fraud can pass-through these filters. Even the smartest clickbot will have a hard time.
In short, it is almost impossible to cheat AdSense in the long term. Instead of spending time, money, and effort trying to outsmart Google, try these tips to improve your AdSense earning.

Once you start getting traffic, you want to do everything you can,
to convert that traffic into clicks on your Adsense ads, a well laid out web page with good content is the best place to start. It will help keep your website visitors interested and they will be more interested to stay longer, come back often and click on your ads more.

There are other tips and tricks that you can use to get people to
click on your ads. Like adding pictures that are related to that
type of ads that you are showing to draw more attention to the ads, but make sure that you adhere to the Adsense terms.

This is the very Good trick i thought, This is like the link exchange, am writing a script below u just have to use this, and what you have to do is that, tell your friend to put that script in your index or main page for 1 week, when the visitor came to his site your web also popups and generate impressions and it might be possible that visitor also surf your web with your friends web and in return put that script in your page after 1 week.

Important Note:
Only put script in one web, Donot put that script in your page and then tell your friend to put that script in your page too other wise too many popups will generate and disturbs the visitor, This decrease the traffic.

Second thing is that make a new page in which no google ads are shown , wheter its visible or hidden, make a seperate page written Enter Site or something like that, and link that page address on that script, Because google donot allowed to put ads in popup window.

Meta tags are very useful for your site to track in search engines, for example my site is about orkut tips and tricks and Mobile funny Sms etc, so i put a meta tag with this kind of discriptions and keyword in the section of my web page.
Well if this meta tags are not use by my site so the big abuse of my site is that when my web name come in search engines its collects 250 max discription of my page whether its about me or about my site or any other kind of stuff which is only for me not for a visitor whose searching for the right word.
For Example:If i search ebook in a google.com search engine, it might collects the discription of this page like:

The very basic thing In adsense as being publisher (one who put google ads in his website or blog to earn money) is the ad placement of Google Ad in your website or blog.

Well you can take an example of big billboard and banners placing at the top of the building facing the buzy road, when we pass through this raod and saw the big billboards advertising some products, when we saw it, we notice that product and buy 1 for home purpose or depends upon the product same as correct placement of ad in our web site is must and when visitor noticed it, it clicks the ad.
Imagine your self as a visitor and visit your page and notice the very 1st place you see, according to me and my experience the visitor 1st look at the very top centre page then look left then search content So the best ad placement is:

So by looking at this content we should place ads at these place, But the question arises here what type of ad should we place?and the answer is:
You should attract the visitors 1st sight, and for this sake Only image ads fullfill this criteria because images ads are really colorfull than simple text ads, So describing my experience here every one should place:
728by90 image-ad at the top centre, below your web banner and below your search box
160by60 text-ad at left top-rite after 728by90 banner ad, if u have a navigation bar at left then put after it like it do in few pages,
put 336by90 image/text ad in center or when your content ends.
i know you all have a question that why i put 200by200 image ad at the top instead of putting 728by90 image ad? Well 1st is if i put 728by90 over there then my page design will effect and bad effect made bad impression and second thing is that am still in a case study or in an experimenting process.. i weekly change my ad placement for better Clicks :)
